Our First Born...Olivia Grace Burgan...her birth story

Our little Olivia Graced us with her arrival on February 17, 2007.  She has always been our little peanut.  At birth she weighed 6lbs 7oz & 19 inches long.  I endured 30 hours of labor with Olivia.  I went into labor with her on my own on my due date.  The night before Matt and I went out to dinner at The Roadhouse in Ft. Wright, KY.  After dinner Matt left to play basketball and by time he got home around 11:30 pm I was asleep.  I woke up around 1:15 am to mild contractions.  They started off around 20 minutes apart and continued to progress throughout the night.  By 6:30 am my contractions were about 15 minutes apart.  I called my sister because I knew she would be up getting ready for work. I also called my mom and mother in law.  Lastly I called my doctor's office when he opened at 9 am.  I spoke to his nurse and told her I thought I was in labor.  She told me to stay at home until my contractions were 5 minutes apart.  We waited at home all day and with a snowstorm coming later in the night we didn't want to risk getting stuck.  We left for the hospital around 5 pm with my contractions about 7 minutes apart.

When we arrived at the hospital I checked in and was taken to triage.  When the triage nurse checked me I was only 2 cm dialated.  She told me I needed to walk the halls to progress my labor.  If I didn't progress, I would be sent home.  As I walked the halls the nurse called and spoke to my ob/gyn.  He told her to let me stay at th hospital and he would break my water a couple hours later.  After he broke my water my contractions got stronger and harder.  It got to the point of my toes curling and not being able t speak through my contractions.  I was given an epidural and I was finally  able to relax and sleep through the night.

At one point during the night Olivia's heart rate dropped and my night nurse gave me an oxygen mask.  It was a little scary, but we got through it.  Around 5:30 am my doctor came in to check on me and I was 10 cm....time to push!   I pushed for an hour before Olivia was born.  However, mty contractions never got closer than 5 minutes apart.  As I was pushing it started to snow.  I remember watching the snow fall inbetween contractions and talking to the nurse about random things.

When the nurse called my doctor to come into the room for delivery a flood of emotions overwhelmed me. I was about to become a MOM!  Overwhelming is an understatement!  She was finally born at 7:03 am...perfect and healthy.  10 fingers, 10 tens.  We were in love.

My parents, sister, and mother in law were all waiting outside my room anxiously  waiting for her.  They said they were leaning against th door and when they heard her cry, they all started to cry too!
